Every child is different and so are their needs; every child has a different learning style. Some children learn by doing( Kinetic Learner), some learn through hearing(Auditory Learner), and some children are Visual Learners. Recognizing how your children learn and teaching them to recognize it themself will be helpful to them as they grow.
Children gravitate to what interests him/her during play. When my son was younger, and I set up play-based learning for him, I noticed that he would spend a lot of time building. He would also explore with the other choices I provide, but he would not stay at those activities for a long time. I continued to notice his interest in doing (Kinetic) things and putting objects together. I also noticed he enjoyed listening to music. He would learn the words to the songs in such a short time. This observation helped to realize that this was not just an interest, but his way of learning for him. When I started teaching my son how to read, I incorporated his learning styles into my approach.
First I let him listen to phonic songs every day to build his phonemic awareness of the sounds the letters make. I also purchased magnetic letters so he can build with them on the Refridgerator or a magnet board while he plays. I also try to do this consistently every day so he had something to look forward to. Next, I began to label areas and objects that were familiar to him around the house for example (door, room, bathroom, table, chair, light, etc.). These words did not end up being the first words my son learned. I wanted to connect the areas that were familiar to him with words and sounds of words.
