Hello Everyone! Are you wondering why Your child don’t sit still? Or do you wonder if your child is the only child that is not paying attention in class? You are not alone. For years I wondered the same thing about my son. Many children display avoidance in small and simple ways, that sometimes goes unnoticed. I noticed whenever my son had a writing assignment to do, he would avoid doing it. I also noticed that he enjoyed being read to, but would avoid reading books on his own. When my son started first grade, his teacher shared with me the frequent bathroom trips he took during independent reading, and writing time. I would also receive messages that my son was roaming the hallways when he asked to go to the bathroom. I did not know at the time that that was how he was handling the challenges he was facing. The school then shared their thoughts/concern with me about my son having a Attention Deficit Disorder. I thought for a moment could this be true? We then decided to get him tested.
During this process with a Neuropsychologist we learned that my son did not have an attention disorder. We discover the reason behind him avoiding reading and writing time in class was because he was having a hard time reading at his grade level. My son was trying to escape what was a great deal of stress at the time for him by asking to go the bathroom. Seeking the help for my son was the best thing we had ever done for him. When the Doctor realize what was the real issue, and suggested the solution, pride as a parent had to leave. We wanted our son to succeed in learning and be able to be confident in it too. The only way for that to happen was not ignoring the signs. Sometimes what appears to be a child being stubborn, defiant, or not respecting authority figure, could simply be a child dealing with a challenge.
There are times that we get the hunch as Parents that something is not right, but we sometimes keep moving. Stop! Yes stop and pay attention. Being a concerned parent is not a bad thing. Next, get the help that you and your doctor think your child needs. Getting help early for our children is very important, and getting help late is better than NEVER. Your child/children is not the only one that might need extra assistance in school, learning, or managing behaviors. I took the step of getting help for my son and I’m glad I did so I can share my experience with you.
